My story

My sleep apnea announced itself at 82% oxygen.

I’d jolt awake at 2 a.m., heart pounding, unable to breathe my way back down. Night after night, for a year and a half, before I even had a name for it. I didn’t know the first thing about apnea, so I did the only thing I knew how to do. I started pulling every lever I could control: weight, neck size, light, screens, nutrition, fasting, devices, products, and thousands of dollars in remedies, all to claw my way back to a normal night’s sleep.

A home sleep test came back “negative”: my AHI of 13 wasn’t severe enough for their device to catch. An in-lab study finally told the truth. My airway was collapsing until my oxygen cratered, and my body was dumping a surge of adrenaline to save me from suffocating, ending my sleep every single time. The lower the oxygen, the harder the surge. Quietly, the apnea was manufacturing a chronic insomnia on top of it.

Here’s the part that broke me. I believed humans were built to sleep without a machine, and the idea that I needed one disgusted me. I was, honestly, willing to risk my life to solve it naturally. So I got obsessive, reading, researching, and mapping the science and its gaps until I understood exactly what was happening inside my own body.

Where I landed: I sleep well again, and I finally understand what actually works. But the bigger thing came out of the struggle. I was frustrated by how little honest guidance existed on which devices to actually buy, and by a healthcare system that managed my symptom but never helped me solve the underlying problem. That frustration turned into a mission: test the products myself, write honestly about what works, and help people.

The first thing that mission produced was something the internet didn’t have: the first independently lab-tested database of the overnight pulse-oximeter market, every device measured against a clinical reference instead of a spec sheet. That was the beginning, not the end. This page isn’t about one kind of device. It’s about testing everything that promises better sleep and health, growing what we actually know about sleep, and helping people optimize their biology with the truth.

I don’t just read studies. I was trained to take them apart.

As part of my Bachelor of Science with a focus in Health Administration, I completed formal research-methodology training under Dr. Richard Douglass, a researcher whose work on the minimum legal drinking age helped drive the national change from 18 to 21.

That training is the difference between quoting a study and scrutinizing one: how to design a study, isolate the variable that actually matters, and judge whether a methodology holds up or falls apart. I bring that same discipline to every product I test and every “clinically proven” claim I check.

How I think & test

Two traditions, one standard.

I’m a science nerd and an ancestral-health nerd, and I refuse to choose between them. I’m a huge admirer of the Weston A. Price Foundation and how humans actually lived and thrived across history, and I love what rigorous science has given the human race. My whole project is annexing the two: first principles from the past, plus the innovation and data of the present, to find what genuinely optimizes a human being today.

Here’s what matters most: I have no stake in which product wins. I’m not here to flatter a brand or tank one. I’m here to find what’s actually true and let the best product win because it earned it. That’s the only outcome I’m loyal to, and it’s the standard every review on this site has to clear.

The right reference instrument for every category

I don’t guess and I don’t rewrite spec sheets. I measure. Whatever I’m testing, I put it up against a high-grade reference: a clinical-grade monitor for oximeters, thermal imaging for cooling systems, and calibrated meters for sound. Here’s the current bench:

SpO₂ patient simulator

Feeds a device a known, controlled oxygen level to bench-check its response.

Digital calipers

Sensor size, spacing, and build measured to the millimeter.

The bench grows with each new category. Thermal imaging and a set of new sensors are next for bed-cooling and sleep-environment testing, with calibrated sound gear on the roadmap.

The research principles behind every test

  1. 01Isolate the variable that matters. Change one thing at a time and hold everything else constant, so the effect I measure is the effect that’s real.
  2. 02Control the conditions. Find the confounders that could move a result and remove or account for every one I can.
  3. 03Replicate before I believe it. Repeat the measurement across enough trials that a fluke can’t pass for a finding, because a single reading is an anecdote, not data.
  4. 04Report what the data says: the effect and its error, wherever it lands, with no cherry-picking and no rounding toward the story I wanted.
