I’ve now scientifically tested over 60 of the most popular SAD lamps, and due to popular demand, this article will go over my favorites for different categories.
Before we get into the recommendations, you may want to familiarize yourself with some of the factors that make a lamp worth buying. So feel free to read on or skip to the recommendations.
Things to Consider When Buying a SAD Lamp
Lux, circadian light, glare, color temperature, flicker, oh my!
Many things combine to make for a good light therapy lamp; it can be challenging to choose one unless you know what you’re looking for and why.
Let’s go through the most critical factors to consider:
Lux
You’ve probably seen a few lamps advertise “10,000 lux!” This is the most popular measurement for bright light therapy.
Lux is a simple number representing the lumens per square meter or the amount of light hitting a surface.
Lumens are spectrally weighted measurements tailored explicitly to the visual sensitivity of the human eye.
This means it fairly accurately tells us how bright a light source is, but there’s a better measurement for light therapy lamps…
Circadian Light
Circadian light, or CLA for short, is similar to lux; only spectrally weighted towards the parts of the light spectrum that most affect our circadian biology.
Just like lux, it spits out a simple numerical value, which makes it easy to compare the effectiveness of various lamps to each other.
You can read more about the model here if you’d like, but basically…
The higher the CLA, the more light sources will wake you up and align your circadian rhythm.
This is a reasonably new metric, so no one reports their CLA, but since we measure all of our devices, we have this info!
Glare (Lux/in2)
One important thing to remember regarding SAD lamps is how comfortable they are. A super bright light might be effective, but if it’s too uncomfortable in your field of view, you probably won’t like using it very much! And while it may technically help with your sleep, you won’t feel all that great while using it.
This is why we measure the light emission area of each lamp we test. This allows us to calculate the lux per square inch, which gives us an idea of how comfortable a light source will be when used.
Consider a flashlight and standing outside on a cloudy day to give you an example of why this is important.
The light outside on a cloudy day can approach 20,000 lux, but since it’s so dispersed and ambient, it doesn’t feel uncomfortable.
Now, a flashlight from two feet away might only reach 3,000 lux, but looking at it will feel like staring into the sun!
This is why the amount of photons per unit area is essential! We ideally want to strike a delicate balance between brightness/effectiveness and visual comfort.

Best Overall: Carex Elite
The Elite is Carex’s newest offering, and it has some great new features and specs that make it my favorite SAD lamp right now.
The Elite puts out less light than the Day-Light Sky I mentioned below, but it makes up for this in several ways.
For one, it’s much more comfortable visually with a glare of 69 versus the Sky’s of 180, meaning you can get a similar amount of light without it feeling as overbearing.
The Elite is also flicker-free on all four brightness settings, unlike the Sky, if that’s important to you.
The Elite also looks quite a bit more modern if you ask me.
But the real treasure here is that the Elite has a VESA mount on the back, meaning you can mount it over your monitor!

This one emits about 2500 more lux than the Elite, but the benefits end there. It’s a bit clunkier-looking, not quite as comfortable, and doesn’t have all the cool mounting options.
It is brighter, more effective, and a bit cheaper. So, if you aren’t too concerned about it being a bit less comfortable and don’t plan to mount it, this might be the better option.

The output is also very high, making it the third brightest SAD lamp we’ve tested at over 20,000 lux at 1 foot!
It also emits a lot of healthy infrared light, which none of these other lamps do. This is great for skin and eye health and abundant in natural morning sunlight!
It’s a bit expensive, but with a robust all-metal design coupled with a fan to help keep it cool, I have no doubt it will last a long time and provide a robust circadian response.

This is the one if you’re looking for something that will match a fairly sunny day but is still comfortable enough to use for an extended period.
The Max puts out around 31,000 lux at 1 foot with a glare of only 400! That means it’s certainly getting to that uncomfortable range, but many people (including myself) can push it to this number.
Its color temperature of 6500K ensures plenty of effective blue light, contributing to its high CLA of around 63,000.

This one uses older fluorescent light technology, which emits a warmer color temperature of around 4350K, making it one of the warmer lamps on this list. Some people may prefer that, as it is closer to the CCT of morning sunlight.

The color temperature of this guy is also pretty much exactly 5700K, making it one of the few lamps that mimic the color of noon sunlight.
Overall, the Lampu is a decently priced compact desk SAD lamp that looks nice and performs well.

Hi Lisa! I know the SAD lamp market isn’t very great outside of the US for the most part. It looks like a lamp by Beurer might work alright! I have yet to test those myself though. Many of the lamps power transformers are rated for up to 220-240Hz so they should work in Australia, you would just need a cheap plug adapter. So if you can find one you can give that a shot.

Thanks for this list! Any reasons you’d recommend the Circadian Optics Lampu over something like Theralite Aura? I was looking at the aura for less glare bc I usually use the dimmest monitor setting to avoid headaches (and it’s a bit cheaper)
That’s a great option! The Lampu is just brighter and more compact for smaller desks is all, probably appeals to more people because of that. The Aura is a good option though for the reasons you mentioned.

I was wondering – for the SAD lamps, does viewing angle matter? Deciding between Verilux Desk (lower viewing angle below head) or Duo floor light (higher overhead viewing angle like the sun). Love to hear your thoughts!
Hey Alonsy! Angle does matter, although to what degree I can’t be sure as it hasn’t been well studied. As far as I’m aware, all things being equal, light from above is more effective than from below or straight on because of the IPRGC cells location in the eye being in the lower hemisphere.
Light from above is also more comfortable so that’s something to keep in mind as well.
If you have room for it, the floor model might feel better and be the most effective, it is quite bright as well!
As for the transformer, as far as I am aware they do all support 220-240V systems, though you may have to email Verilux to make sure.

If you’re close to a decent lamp, they will always outperform the glasses. Glasses are best for when you don’t have the time to sit in one spot in the morning.
As for the PhotoVites or any other lamp. I’d shoot for at least 20-30 minutes, but more is almost always more effective. The PhotoVites runs for only 15 minutes because it is very bright and the spectrum itself is more effective than most others, but in general for most lamps you’re looking at 30+ minutes for the most effective dose.
Once again, thanks for all your great work. One thing I have been wandering is about how to use the lights. I see you have them above your computer monitors. Can you work while using the lights? Would it be beneficial to have for instance the beurer TL 95 on a lower setting and use it for a longer time while working?
Hey Kenneth! I think it really depends on what you find comfortable and effective. You kind of want to “fill the bucket” as it were. So either a lot of light over a shorter period of time, or less over a longer time. OR if you can handle it the more the better lol
I often use mine on bright until I feel like I’ve had enough of that (40 minutes or so) then I’ll turn them down.
i am from germany. i wanna use daylight lamp while using smartphone for 20 or so minutes. the smartphone needs to be 10cm away from my face. i use glasses thus i cant use glasses with daylight. the bright light will make every scratch visible on the glass and thats annoying as hell. which parameters should the lamp have?

Hey Eric! I’m not aware of any ceiling mountable “SAD lamps”. I suppose you could find high lumen downlights? Or perhaps alternative “skylight” LED fixtures, for example the kind Yuji sells.
The only SAD lamp I can think of off hand that could work would be the CAREX Elite since it has a VESA mount on the back, which should make it relatively easy to mount any way you’d like.

Well if you’re after the very best light output the DIY is the way to go! (for now anyways) although the Elite is nice for the price and the setup and mounting are very easy.
If you go the DIY route I’d recommend a dimmer, that’s something I would change about my first build, it’s nice to be able to turn it down a bit after the first 30 minutes or so because it is quite bright!

You can certainly find “high CRI” for cheaper than “sunlike” but it’s a shame they don’t provide an SPD graph. Probably not “full spectrum” in the sense that I use it but high CRI is a nice close second!
Have you tried using a collapsible photography softbox diffuser to reduce glare? You can buy those for around $20 (or DIY), so that could be an affordable way to get more versatility out of a small portable travel lamp. But I don’t have a spectrometer or a strong sense of how much the diffuser material would reduce the effective lux output.

Hey Ray! Not a bad idea. I wonder if you have any suggestions that aren’t too bulky? That’s always been my problem with photography diffusers. But yes in theory any kind of convenient diffuser would help with glare by a lot.
I think as long as it “feels” bright after diffusion, it’s likely having some effect.

I’ve always struggled with getting up in the morning though sleeping with a C-PAP Machine has helped. I’ve just accepted a job position in Nunavut, which has only 4 hours of sunlight during parts of the winter I believe so I’d like to buy two therapy lights.
1) The first one I want for home, ideally if it is on a stand that’s adjustable and has some sort of programmable timer that I could set to come on at a particular time. It would be nice if it also has some adjustable levels of brightness and perhaps the color so I could also use it to read at night.
2) I’ll be working as a school counsellor, so want another one for in my office that I can use there. I thought that maybe a floor lamp might also be a good option here as I could easily turn it around, or move to different parts of the office to incorporate light therapy into working with the students. I saw some on Amazon that I think have timers and remotes which seemed like it would be convenient, but it would be interesting to have your opinion on the quality of these lamps rather than take the company’s advertising at face value. I’m leaving possibly by August 16th or 17th, and due to the cost of getting things shipped up there, and due to the fact my school is shipping 2000 pounds for me in the relocation allowance I want to order it to my address here in Prince Edward Island, Canada before I leave, and also so I can plug it in and make sure it’s working before I get up there.

Since it has the timer I think best choice of the two for my bedroom, but if the first option (Happy Lamp) is over-all a better quality then perhaps I should buy one of each, and since I might not need a timer for the one in my office at work and put it there. Then again, if the timer feature has an option to just turn it on and set it to turn off after a certain amount of time that could be useful for keeping track of time in my sessions. I suppose also, that if they are of similar quality and I have one of each I can test them for my personal preference in the event I want to buy a third one down the road for my living room or something like that.

1. If you want to use a timer check out the DB and filter for “smart plug compatible”, these lamps can be used with one.
2. I did just review the Northern Light SAD lamps which are from Canada. Their floor lamp was pretty decent. https://amzn.to/3IxMqmg. This will work with timer outlet plugs and things like that.
Unfortunately I’ve not personally tested the two lamps you’re linked to so I’m unsure as to how they actually perform :/
Also considering getting one of these and mounting it with one of those iPad holders that musicians use so that I can easily travel with it and easily take it back home with me during vacations.

Hey Aiden! The good thing is basically any lamp can be effective as long as you’re close enough or use it long enough. Generally you’ll know too, you can typically feel the light working if it is.
As for UK options I’m not 100% aware of all the options since I don’t technically have access to all of them here in the USA. But, I’d say something cheap from Lumie or Beurer?

I’m cautious because Amazon doesn’t ship this model directly here, I’d need to use a forwarding agent, and returning it would be expensive and complicated if the smell turned out to be a persistent problem.
I am also considering their older models (though I find the design unappealing, haha) and the Circadian Optics Lampu, which you listed, and Amazon can ship directly over here.
What would be your recommendation as an expert?

Honestly if you’re unsure, the Lampu is not a bad lamp! It scores very high in the circadian light department.
