Explore the largest blue-blocker database in the world! Find the perfect pair and buy with confidence.

blue blockers

Learn About the Database:

You can easily sort the table by Sleep, Computer, or Migraine.

We’ve categorized the lenses as simply as we could, if you’re looking for an evening pair for better sleep and melatonin production, go with a Sleep pair.

If you’re looking to cut down on some blue light during the day, go with a Computer pair.

If you’re looking to try out a more unique lens for migraines or light sensitivity, check out the Migraine glasses!

Instead of just arbitrarily stating how much blue or green light is blocked, we’ve also denoted how much Circadian Light has been blocked.

Circadian Light is a metric derived through an advanced algorithm developed by the LHRC which looks at a light source’s overall spectrum and how likely it is to interact with human circadian biology.

This weighs the light that falls within the melanopic sensitivity range and gives it a score based on how much light is present in that range.

circadian stimulus graph

Since your environment will largely determine the lux levels, we’ve gone ahead and shown the percentage reduction seen from various glasses.

You can read more about circadian stimulus here.

Each pair of glasses we test is visually compared to a full-spectrum light source.

truedark yellow blue blocking glasses spectral power distribution graph before and after
An example of the spectrum of light before and after the glasses are worn.

This gives you a handy way to check which brands block which kinds of light and roughly how much.

Spitschan, M., Nam, S., & Veitch, J. A. (2022). luox: Platform for calculating quantities related to light and lighting [Software]. Available from https://luox.app/.

We also show you how just how much violet, blue, and green light is reduced through each lens. Below are the wavelength ranges we’ve gone with for these colors.

Nanometer Ranges:

  • Violet: 380 – 435
  • Blue: 435 – 495
  • Green: 495 – 570

We’ve calculated the perceived brightness reduction by looking at lux changes through lenses.

Lux is simply a measurement of how much light exists within the spectral sensitivity window of the human eye.

In other words, lux is how bright a light source is.

Some glasses block more lux and less circadian light than others. And some go the other way.

If you’re looking to maximize melatonin production, but still want to see as well as possible, look for a pair with low lux reduction and high circadian light reduction.

On the other hand, a bright light source can be harmful to sleep regardless of the spectrum, so if you’re in a particularly bright environment, or already have trouble sleeping, looking for a pair of glasses with high lux reduction may be beneficial, though visibility will suffer.

To keep things simple we’ve aimed to test lenses rather than individual pairs of glasses themselves.

The style of the glasses you choose, however, will determine how effective they are.

Most styles will block most of the light. However, if you have sleeping problems or find yourself especially susceptible to short-wavelength light at night, consider your style selection carefully.

Wraparound and Fitover glasses that don’t let a lot of light in through the sides will naturally block more light than a stylish pair with the same lenses.

Gunner glasses is also blue light filtering. Could you do a comparison of that brand please?
    Thank you.

Do you mean a separate blog post of some kind? We have tested three of their lenses which can be found in the table above under the brand “Gunnar”

I’d love to see the BluBlocker tested, especially the bullet model with a wraparound lense

Good idea! I’ll grab a couple pairs for testing. Thanks for the suggestion.

Hey, thanks so much for building this resource, I have severe delayed sleep phase disorder and it can be so hard to sift through info about helpful options online when so much of it bunk. Boncharge has stuff on their website selling energy balancing stickers for your phone. It’s just hard to navigate your options when a lot of it overlaps with pseudo scientific nonsense.

I’d really love to see you do a review of the brand “blublocker”, especially their “bullet” model with the wraparound lens- they’re an old brand I think from the 80s that’s always marketed themselves around being blublocking. I’m thinking about getting some and was wondering how they compare. Though I’m sure they cant be completely green blocking since some folks use them for driving and presumably they can still see green lights.

Sometimes I have to stay awake in order to do certain stuff if I won’t be able to wake up in time, like run a time sensitive errand, or at one point it was the only way I’d be able to vote, so being able to see green lights while driving is pretty helpful, even if they’re not perfect for sleep. If I get some, would it be helpful for me to ship them to you to test, and then you could send them to me?

Thanks for all your time put into these datebases and reviews. DSPD has had a major impact on my life and I’m still learning to live with it- resources like this are of tremendous help. Hope you’re doing well and that you had a lovely holidays!

Hi Chris thanks so much for the comment! I agree the whole blue blocking industry is a bit buzzwordy and it’s hard to sift through all the information and know what’s true, that’s pretty much why I started this.

I’ll grab some BluBlockers lenses to test myself so don’t worry about sending anything in!

Have a lovely holiday season yourself 😀

Could you specify which Block Blue Light glasses were tested? Your link on the “light yellow” lenses leads to their selection of totally clear lenses so I’m confused. Your link for that brand listed as “yellow” is the light yellow DayLights, “amber” is the darker Sundown, and “dark amber” is a red lens called NightFall. The brand has 4 lens type and you tested 4, I’m just confused why their clear lens is listed here as light yellow and their crimson is listed as dark amber. Makes me think they’ve changed the lenses since you tested. The “light yellow” 20% links to what are very definitely clear lenses. Described by the brand as crystal clear and the photos are of clear lenses. Either something has changed, or they somehow have a crystal clear lens with 20% circadian reduction… or they’re fibbing wildly about those lenses being clear.

    1. Derek Antosiek Avatar

      Good questions Jennilynn!

Block Blue Lights lenses are a bit misleading. For one the difference between their Sundown and Nightfall lenses is almost nonexistent in reality, while on their website they appear quite a bit different in color.

This extends to the “clear” lenses which are in fact slightly yellow, see the product review photos on this page for example:

Very great information! I love when people make real science and do actual measurements. Why did you choose a reference light source that emits almost no UV? I’m particularly interested in how these lenses filter out UV as well! For instance, I’m thinking about purchasing Zenni Blokz glasses for everyday wear and would appreciate confirmation that they effectively filter UV light (including UVC, UVB, and UVA up to 400 nm). It’s disappointing that your light source only begins at 395nm.

    1. Derek Antosiek Avatar

      Thank you!

Initially, the idea was to simply verify how well these blocked artificial blue and violet light and I didn’t have a spectrometer that could measure the UV range when I began this database.

I’m hoping to improve this one day with those metrics measured as well.

Could you test the red PaleoTech glasses next time you test. I was switching between them and the new red TrueDark glasses I just bought while I was watching a TV show that was showing a blue sky scene and I could see more blue with the TrueDark than with the cheaper PaleoTech ones, and the PT ones had larger lenses that didn’t let much light in compared to the TDs.

    1. Derek Antosiek Avatar

Hadn’t heard of those! I’ll add them to my list. Looks like they have a bunch of different kinds, I’ll see if I can get a hold of them all haha

I haven’t tested those! Theraspec recently redid their lineup so I need to go through the new ones.

Just found this a few days ago—this database is amazing!! Super helpful for comparing different brands and models

Do you anyone have thoughts on this one or the brand? https://amzn.eu/d/imAhk3q

I’m looking for something similar to the Spectra 479 (https://amzn.eu/d/4rDETZR): wraparound fit, sport-style (not like the TrueDark Twillight ones), but without spending 50 bucks. Tried the Infield glasses but wasn’t a fan of the style.

    Thank you so much!

I’ve had those on my todo list but haven’t gotten around to getting a pair! I’ll try to speed up the process haha
