We’ve categorized the lenses as simply as we could, if you’re looking for an evening pair for better sleep and melatonin production, go with a Sleep pair.

If you’re looking to cut down on some blue light during the day, go with a Computer pair.

If you’re looking to try out a more unique lens for migraines or light sensitivity, check out the Migraine glasses!

Finally we’ve added a Kids filter if you’re looking for brands that have smaller glasses for children.

Instead of just arbitrarily stating how much blue or green light is blocked, we’ve also denoted how much Circadian Light has been blocked.

Circadian Light is a metric derived through an advanced algorithm developed by the LHRC which looks at a light source’s overall spectrum and how likely it is to interact with human circadian biology.

This weighs the light that falls within the melanopic sensitivity range and gives it a score based on how much light is present in that range.

Since your environment will largely determine the lux levels, we’ve gone ahead and shown the percentage reduction seen from various glasses.

Each pair of glasses we test is visually compared to a full-spectrum light source.

This gives you a handy way to check which brands block which kinds of light and roughly how much.

We also show you how just how much violet, blue, and green light is reduced through each lens. Below are the wavelength ranges we’ve gone with for these colors.

Nanometer Ranges:

  • Violet: 380 – 435
  • Blue: 435 – 495
  • Green: 495 – 570

We’ve calculated the perceived brightness reduction by looking at lux changes through lenses.

Lux is simply a measurement of how much light exists within the spectral sensitivity window of the human eye.

In other words, lux is how bright a light source is.

Some glasses block more lux and less circadian light than others. And some go the other way.

If you’re looking to maximize melatonin production, but still want to see as well as possible, look for a pair with low lux reduction and high circadian light reduction.

On the other hand, a bright light source can be harmful to sleep regardless of the spectrum, so if you’re in a particularly bright environment, or already have trouble sleeping, looking for a pair of glasses with high lux reduction may be beneficial, though visibility will suffer.

To keep things simple we’ve aimed to test lenses rather than individual pairs of glasses themselves.

The style of the glasses you choose, however, will determine how effective they are.

Most styles will block most of the light. However, if you have sleeping problems or find yourself especially susceptible to short-wavelength light at night, consider your style selection carefully.

Wraparound and Fitover glasses that don’t let a lot of light in through the sides will naturally block more light than a stylish pair with the same lenses.

You have light yellow – yellow amber – dark amber
they have clear – yellow -amber -red
At the bottom they seem to call yellow light yellow, but the clear remains.

Looking at how you link “check price”,
what you test as light yellow, they call clear on their main pages,
is that correct? Yellow then being yellow also on main pages.

Yes I try to be a bit more realistic and literal about my lenses colors. “Clear” is often a light yellow tint, and not at all actually clear. Their red is also not red, but a darker amber color.

most of the manufacturers have percentages % on the left side of charts,
would be good if you could include for easier correlation,
but keeping the outline of daylight (presumably, the black outline)

Great database, much thanks for you setting this up and making it available to everyone. I don’t know if you coded this website yourself but one small suggestion would be to move the “state” of the filter options into the URL as query params so that when you share a link from this blue-blocker-database after putting in your filter options, the user opening the link will exactly what filter options were put it in place. Hi Remus! I currently use an off-the-shelf WordPress plugin so I’m pretty limited. I completely agree though, there’s a lot I’d like to change about this database, as well as the others. I’ve been thinking about reaching out to a developer for help but I’m imaging it costing a lot of time, money, and frustration lol ๐Ÿ˜‚

Great database, thank you so much. One question for you – under the migraine purpose you have Theraspec FL-41 Dark and FL-41 Light. On their website they have three options: Standard, Extra, and Max. Do you know which ones of these your Dark/Light labels correlate to?

Keep coming back to this database and other related pages on here regarding blue light blocking and migraine glasses. Great work! Would love to see how the mild yellow Zenni Blokz Plus Anti-Fatigue lenses stack up on here. You recommend them on the Computer Glasses article, and I’ve seen comments saying they’ve been discontinued, but they’re still available from Zenni. I had a pair from years back, and just ordered an updated prescription pair a couple months ago. They’re my favorite of the lightly tended variety versus some of Zenni’s more intense tints. Hopefully you still have them yourself, though I imagine it’s silly having closet/shelf space just with rows upon rows of glasses you don’t wear every day!

I’m very grateful to you for the information about the need to block GREEN light, not just blue light. For a few years I’ve used a fit-over version of the orange UVEX Skyper (Honeywell has since discontinued the fit-over model) and amber light bulbs with no noticeable improvement in sleep. Your articles and database are a great resource. I bought Hooga red light bulbs to replace the amber lights and tried TrueDark fit-over glasses.

Unfortunately, even though you rate TrueDark #1, their fit-over model allows quite a bit of light to leak in around the frame, so I’m returning them. It was hard to find other RED fit-over glasses in your DB. Finally discovered that Safety Blue and Bloomoak have fit-over models, and both have design similar to the Honeywell model (UVEX by Honeywell Ultra-Spec 2000 Clear Safety Glasses With SCT-Orange Anti-Fog Lens – S0360X), which fit well and didn’t seem to leak light. Note that Safety Blue doesn’t come up on your DB when searching for fit-overs, and for both when you click on Check Price, the link goes to standard model, so it’s easy to miss that both Safety Blue and Bloomoak have fit-overs.

Bloomoak’s scores are a little lower than Safety Blue’s, which are a little lower than TrueDark’s. Do you think these small differences mean they will be less effective in improving sleep compared to glasses with higher scores?

Hey James! Thank for mentioning that about the Safety Blue fitovers, I used that, I’ve updated the DB. As far as linking goes it’s unfortunately difficult to link to multiple models just due to the limitations of the Database plugin I use currently.

Truedark certainly performs the best out of the three, however it’s likely not something most people would notice. Bloomoak lets through about 1% more green than both of the others, which again isn’t much and won’t be an issue unless you’ve got some very sensitive eyes.

Hey I appreciate all the hard work! You guys need to test SPY Sunglasses. SPY makes two blue blocking lenses. Spy blue blocking lenses are also “Happy Lenses” Which is Spy’s special lens technology that makes colors pop. Spy has awesome customer service they can answer all of your questions too. Currently all their lenses are 50% off. The only downside I found is that the happy lenses are a little susceptible to high heat. Don’t leave them in a hot car. The happy lenses get like weird surface level cracks. The cracks always develop in a rectangle shape. I could be wrong maybe SPY has fixed that one issue. Other than that the lenses are pretty robust. And they’re awesome to look through. The other awesome part is you can buy just the lenses. So it’s really not that bad. You should also try out their sunglasses. The Super Happy lenses are amazing! They pack so much tech into a single lens. Happy lens, polarized, and mirrored finish. Also the Happy blue blocking lenses are awesome for nighttime driving. I have one of their clear happy lenses for my snowboard goggles and it’s amazing for night skiing. It’s surprising how much the happy lens technology helps in low visibility/light situations.
